Sareh Javanmardidomani completed an Iranian double after being voted as the best female athlete of the month for September.

She achieved the feat after becoming Iran’s first ever first-ever female gold medallist in Paralympic shooting at Rio 2016.

Javanmardidomani triumphed in the P2 women's 10 metre air pistol SH1 event before doubling her gold medal tally with success in the P4 mixed 50m pistol SH1 competition.

The 31-year-old secured 41 per cent of the public vote for the monthly accolade, her victory following that of her compatriot Siamand Rahman, the world’s strongest powerlifter, who earned the men’s title for September.

Italian wheelchair fencer Beatrice Vio came second, earning 38 per cent of the votes cast.

Vio, winner of the women’s individual foil category B competition gold and team bronze medals at the Games, is unlikely to be too disheartened having been selected by Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi to attend the final state dinner hosted by Barack Obama at the White House earlier this week.

The United States’ Grace Norman came third with 18 per cent after she upset Britain’s favourite Lauren Steadman to win the women’s Para-triathlon PT4 event on the sport’s Paralympic debut.

New Zealand swimmer Sophie Pascoe, Nigerian powerlifter Josephine Orji and Chinese swimmer Li Zhang were also nominated.

As a result of the Paralympics taking place in September, the IPC opted to separate its monthly Allianz award - which is normally open to all Paralympic athletes – into three separate categories.

A Best Male Athlete and Best Female Athlete have both been awarded.

The Best Team award will be awarded later.
