Egypt’s Mazen Hesham has pulled out of the upcoming 2016 Professional Squash Association (PSA) Men’s World Championship in Cairo after failing to recover from the hip injury he suffered during last month’s Al Ahram Squash Open in Giza.

The 22-year-old, who is ranked 22nd in the world and has fast become one of the most popular and enigmatic characters on the PSA World Tour, was forced to retire mid-way through his first qualifying round clash with Spaniard Carlos Cornes Ribadas, meaning he also missed last week’s US Open.

As a result of the injury, United States number one Todd Harrity replaces Hesham in the main draw and will take on three-time world champion Ramy Ashour in the opening round.

Qualification for the 2016 PSA Men’s World Championship is due to begin on October 25, with the main draw action getting underway on October 27.

Gregory Gaultier will begin the defence of his title with a first-round tie against New Zealand’s Paul Coll.

The Frenchman had ended his wait for the world title when he triumphed against Egypt’s Omar Mosaad in last year’s final in American city Bellevue in Washington, having previously ended as the runner-up on four separate occasions.

Should Gaultier make it through his opening match, he could face the tricky task of taking on Egypt’s Marwan Elshorbagy, who beat him at the Grasshopper Cup in Zurich in April.

World number one Mohamed Elshorbagy, Marwan's brother, will face a qualifier in the first round of the tournament as he seeks to claim the world title for the first time in his career.

The Egyptian has twice tasted defeat in the final, losing to his countryman Ashour in both the 2012 and 2014 title deciders, when both tournaments were in Doha.

Tickets to the tournament are available for free when purchasing a day pass to the Wadi Degla Club.

Prices start from $5 (£4.07/€4.55).
