The European branch of the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) has announced that Tenerife will host the 2017 European Championships for men and women.

The Spanish Federation of Sports for People with Physical Impairment (FEDDF) will organise the event on the Canary Island, which is scheduled to take place from June 19 to July 1 next year.

The previous edition of the competition was held in 2015 at the University of Worcester in England.

The event saw Germany reclaim the women’s title from The Netherlands, after beating the defending champions in a closely fought final, 72-62.

The two countries had won every edition of the Championships since the inaugural tournament in 1974, with Germany securing the most titles with nine.

However, they missed out in 2013 when The Netherlands earned their fifth crown in Frankfurt.

Hosts Britain joined Germany and The Netherlands on the podium after cruising to victory over France in the third place play-off, 69-39.

Elsewhere, there was further success for Britain as they secured the men's gold for the third consecutive tournament.

The hosts won a highly entertaining gold medal match against Turkey, securing a 87-66 win to retain their title.

They would be joined on the podium by Germany after they earned a 74-56 triumph over The Netherlands.
