The refugees applauded wildly and took photos with the demo team members after the performance.

The team also offered the refugees a free taekwondo class during their time at the event.

"Many African nations won medals at the recent Rio 2016 Summer Olympics," said WTF President Chungwon Choue in a short speech of encouragement to those in attendance.

"Going forward, the WTF aims to provide refugee athletes with the chance to compete in major Championships."

The demonstration team is currently on a tour of Italy.

Last Wednesday (October 5), at the first-ever Global Conference on Faith and Sport, they performed in front of Pope Francis at the Vatican.

Following the formation of the Taekwondo Humanitarian Foundation (THF), the body and the WTF have focused on helping refugees and empowering them through the martial art.

The THF and WTF are currently sponsoring a taekwondo facility and classes at a camp for Syrian refugees in Jordan, and are due to start full-scale fund-raising activities at the upcoming World Junior Championships in Burnaby in Canada next month.

Last month, Choue urged a host of philanthropists and people from the world of business to partner with the THF at the 2016 China Charity Fair.

During the annual event, held at the Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Centre, Choue delivered a presentation under the topic "Empowering the World’s Most Powerless Children". 

After discussing the establishment of the THF with the attendees, he detailed prior programmes among earthquake victims in Nepal, as well as the project in Jordan and another in Turkey. 

Choue also revealed that future programmes are planned for Rwanda, Ethiopia and Colombia.

After his time on stage, Choue signed a cooperation agreement with Dr. Dezhi Lu, chairman of the Huamin Charity Foundation.

Lu agreed to fully support the THF.
