Both of the reigning Professional Squash Association (PSA) US Open champions began their title defences with comfortable wins on day two of the World Series tournament at Philadelphia's Drexel University.

England's Laura Massaro and Gregory Gaultier of France both eased into the second round of their respective competitions with dominant performances.

Gaultier, the world champion, easily defeated England's Daryl Selby 11-8, 11-6, 11-3 while Massaro overcame Egyptian qualifier Kanzy Emad El Defrawy, 11-6, 11-9, 11-7.

The duo were both successful at last week’s NetSuite Open and have seemingly carried their form into this event.

Elsewhere, Gaultier’s compatriot Mathieu Castagnet was the only men's seed to fail to make it into the second round in the bottom half of the draw.

Castagnet, who was seeded eighth, lost in straight games to an in-form Ali Farag - the Egyptian Al Ahram Open runner-up - 11-8, 11-6, 11-7.

Men's fourth seed Nick Matthew of England beat home favourite Christopher Gordon 11-4, 11-7, 11-6 in 39 minutes.

In the women's competition, Egypt's Nouran Gohar beat France's Coline Aumard with ease.

Fourth seed Gohar claimed her second round position with an 11-6, 11-5, 11-5 win in 37 minutes.

Gohar will now take on England's Emily Whitlock after she defeated Tesni Evans of Wales in a five game marathon.

Whitlock came from two games down to come back and win the contest, 11-13, 6-11, 12-10, 11-8, 11-7.

There was only one home American winner in today's action and that was seventh seed Amanda Sobhy.

She came from a game down to beat Dipika Pallikal Karthik of India, 7-11, 11-3, 11-1, 11-4.

As a result the US player has been handed what appears to be the easiest draw of the second round, as she takes on the only unseeded woman left, Australia's Donna Urquhart.

Second round action gets underway tomorrow.
