Their compatriots Marco Garelli and Sara Venerucci pushed the duo but were eventually forced to settle for second place on 533.300.

An all Italian podium was completed by Nicola Merlani and Alessia Gambardella, after they finished with a tally of 479.200 points.

The host nation continued to dominate the day, with Silvia Stibilj triumphing in the ladies' solo dance competition.

Stibilj achieved a score of 261.630 to finish top of the overall standings and delight the watching crowd.

Silver and bronze medals were claimed by Colombia’s Viviana Osorio and Cecilia Liendo of Argentina.

It followed the skaters achieving scores of 251.300 and 246.730 respectively.

Portugal’s Ricardo Pinto had looked on course to successfully defend his men’s dance title after leading at the end of the short programme.

His final score of 263.920 at the end of the solo dance event would not prove enough, however, as Italy’s Daniel Morandin rose into first place by scoring 263.920.

Morandin’s team-mate Alessandro Spigai won bronze with a total of 261.470.
