The Slovak Olympic Committee (SOC) has held a celebration to mark the 70th birthday of former Olympic high jumper Mary Mračnová.

Mračnová, who was born in Kosice, is among Slovakian sport’s greatest personalities having competed at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City, and the 1969 European Championships in Athens, where she won a bronze medal.

Following her sports career, Mračnová became a physical education and biology teacher, working in the Department of Physical Education, Faculty of Chemical Technology at the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava.

At the same time, she continued to be actively involved in the Olympic Movement, serving as an Executive Committee member of the Czechoslovak Olympic Committee from 1987 to 1992.

In December 1992, at the inaugural meeting of the SOC, Mračnová was elected vice-president under the leadership of Vladimir Černušák.

Fifteen years later, she received the International Olympic Committee (IOC) trophy from then IOC President Jacques Rogge for her overall engagement in sport and the Olympic Movement.

Mračnová is currently President of the Bratislava Olympic Club and chair of the SOC Women and Sport Committee.

She has also been actively involved in the activities of the European Olympic Committees (EOC), most notably chairing the Organising Committee of the fourth Winter European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF) held in Poprad-Tatry in 1999.

Furthermore, Mračnová worked in the EOC Commission for the European Youth Olympic Days, which later became known as "festival" and has been in existence for quarter of a century.

She is married to the famous physician Joseph Mračnom, a well-known surgeon in Bratislava who has helped many top athletes.

Their daughter Zuzana was a member of Slovakia’s winning basketball team at the 1997 EYOF in Lisbon and last year she competed at the inaugural European Games in Baku.
