The Jeju Grand Prix event has been cancelled and removed from the International Judo Federation’s (IJF) World Tour calendar, it has been announced.

The competition on the South Korean island was due to be held from November 24 to 26 but the sport’s governing body has revealed it will not take place.

An IJF spokesperson refused to give further information as to the reasons behind the decision to axe an event.

The IJF are set to reveal the events on the 2017 calendar in the near future but it is not yet know whether a competition will be staged in Jeju City, the capital of the island.

It has played host to an IJF Grand Prix event, which form a key part of the sport’s international schedule, since 2013.

The 2013 edition was the first IJF Grand Prix to be held in Jeju and it then staged events in 2014 and last year.

The competition in Jeju City usually marks the end of the Grand Prix season, with the IJF World Tour campaign traditionally coming to a close with the Tokyo Grand Slam.

"The following World Judo Tour events are Grand Prix Tashkent 2016 and Grand Slam Abu Dhabi 2016 in October, the Grand Prix Qingdao 2016 in November and the Grand Slam Tokyo 2016 in December," the IJF said in a statement on its website.

The World Tour season is due to resume with the next Grand Prix in the Uzbek capital of Tashkent, scheduled to take place from October 6 to 8.

The Qingdao Grand Prix then comes to the fore between November 18 and 20, with the Grand Slam in the Japanese capital, the next Olympic and Paralympic Games host city, due to take place from December 2 to 4.
