The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) has held a meeting with sporting governing bodies in the country to discuss preparations for next year's Commonwealth Youth Games in The Bahamas.

Each governing body was addressed by Richard Akpokavie, the secretary general of the GOC, and Richmond Quarcoo, the deputy secretary general, about the format and objectives for the Games.

Representatives from the Ghana Swimming Association, Ghana Rugby Association, Ghana Judo Association, Ghana Boxing Federation, Ghana Athletics Association, Ghana Tennis Association and Ghana Volleyball Association were all in attendance.

Ghana won the country's first-ever Commonwealth Youth Games gold medal in athletics when Richard Seklorwu won the long jump title at the last edition of the event in Samoa last year.

It was the African nation's only medal in the Pacific nation.

Bahamas Prime Minister Perry Christie promised to deliver the best-ever edition of the Youth Games when organisers celebrated the one year to go milestone in July.

The event, due to run from July 18 to 23 in 2017, will be the first multi-sports competition to be held in the Caribbean nation, with around 1,300 athletes expected to compete for 94 medals.

Athletics, swimming, rugby sevens, road cycling, judo, boxing, tennis and beach soccer have all been confirmed on the programme and insidethegames understands beach volleyball will be included for the first time.

The majority of the events will be staged at the Queen Elizabeth Sports Centre, which includes the world-class 15,000-capacity Thomas A Robinson stadium in capital Nassau.

The facility is due to host athletics and both the Opening and Closing Ceremonies.
