Russia proved to be the dominant nation at the European Para-Taekwondo Championships as they clinched six gold medals during the one-day event at the Sport Hall "Torwar" in Warsaw.

Vladislav Krichfalushiy began the Russian gold rush as he won the men’s K41 under 61 kilograms event with victory over Shahmir Abadov of Azerbaijan.

Bronze medals in the category went to Slavko Adamov of Serbia and Hungarian Csaba Simon.

Spartak Gazzaev then beat home taekwondo player Przemyslaw Wieczorek in the K41 over 75kg competition, with the tournament going straight to the final as they were the only two athletes entered.

Askhat Akmatov continued the good performance from the Russian competitors as he took the men’s K44 under 61kg crown by overcoming Sajjad Javanbakht of Iran in the final.

Antonino Bossolo of Italy and Turkey’s Mahmut Bozteke ended the event on a high as they each sealed bronze medals.

The fourth Russian triumph of the competition in the Polish capital, seen as a key tournament for the development of taekwondo ahead of its Paralympic debut at Tokyo 2020, came thanks to Magomedzagir Isaldibirov.

Like team-mate Akmatov, Isaldibirov had to overcome an Iranian taekwondo player to claim gold as he beat Mahdi Pourrahnama.

Abulfaz Abuzarl of Azerbaijan and Russia’s Vladimir Feofanov won the bronze medals.

Russia were denied a fifth European Para-Taekwondo title in the men’s K44 over 75kg weight class as Croatia’s Ivan Mikulic got the better of Zainutdin Ataev in the gold medal bout.

Evan Medell of the United States secured the only bronze medal up for grabs.

Russia also emerged victorious in two women’s categories, with Sakinat Magomedova defeating Serbia’s Dejana Backo in the K41 under 49kg event.

Sevil Abdulov also took the gold medal as she was the only entrant in the K41 under 58kg weight class.

Azerbaijan put in an impressive showing in the men’s divisions, securing the gold medal in the men’s K42 under 75kg and over 75kg competitions.

Nijat Muslumov reigned supreme in the under 75kg, holding off the challenge of Mahmoud Jafarzadeh of Iran to top the podium, while bronze medals were won by Turkey’s Mehmet Serkan and Lukman-Khakim Istamulov, who added to the Russian medal haul.

Aleksandr Polishuk then proved too strong for Nyshan Omirali of Kazakhstan in the over 75kg final, with Ugur Yildiz of Turkey and Ahmad Narimani of Iran taking the bronze medals.

There was also success for the Ukraine as Viktoriia Marchuk clinched the gold medal in the women's K43 under 49kg event by overpowering India's Sonali.

Danijela Jovanovic of Serbia did enough for the bronze medal.

A record-breaking 147 athletes from 32 countries took part at the European Para-Taekwondo Championships.
