A new luge track is being built in Chusovoy

A new state-of-the-art bobsleigh, skeleton and luge track is being built in Chusovoy located in the Russian region of Perm, it has been announced. 

It is estimated that the new track will cost RUB2,6 billion (£3.1 million/$4.1 million/€3.6 million).

The track will be financed with funding from the Federal Government and has already been given the go-ahead by Russia's Transport Ministry.

Walter Plaikner, head of the International Luge Federation's Technical Commission, recently visited the proposed site in Chusovoy, located at the confluence of the Usva and Vilva Rivers with the Chusovaya River. 

The Italian, winner of an Olympic gold medal in the men's doubles at Sapporo 1972, claimed that the track had the potential to become one of the best in the world.

There are currently two luge facilities in Russia.

One is in Sochi and was built for the 2014 Winter Olympics.

The other is located in Paramonovo, 60 miles outside Moscow.
