World champion Douglas Brose of Brazil chose the perfect time to secure his first Karate1 Premier League gold medal of the season as he delivered the victory the home crowd desperately craved by winning the under 60 kilogram kumite division at the Gymnasium Paulo Sarasate in Fortaleza today.

The competition in the Braziian city gave Brose the chance to end his difficult run of form on the World Karate Federation (WKF) sanctioned series of events - and he took it with style by beating Miguel Soffia of Chile in the final.

The result handed the 30-year-old his second major triumph of the year on home soil after he won the Pan American Championships title in Olympic Games host city Rio de Janeiro in May.

Pablo Pallavicini of Chile and and Brazil's Edemilson dos Santos were the recipients of the two bronze medals in Brose's weight division.

The success for Brose was one of five victories for the hosts on the opening day of the event, the eighth on the 2016 WKF Karate1 Premier League calendar.

Breno Teixeira reigned supreme in the men's under 67kg kumite category as he overcame team-mate Vinicius Figueira, with Chilean duo Camilo Velozo and Israel Santa each taking home a bronze medal.

Hernani Verissimo then proved too strong for German Charpentier of Chile to clinch the under 75kg title, while fellow Brazilians Milton Menezes and David Nascimento rounded off the podium.

Brazil swept the medals in the male kata - though they were the only nation which competed in the discipline - as Lucas Santos, Williames Souza Santos and Luiz Inacio de Lima Junior finished in gold, silver and bronze medal position respectively.

Brazil's female karatekas were also in good form as Valeria Kumizaki and Giovanni Feroldi emerged victorious in the under 55kg and under 50kg kumite categories.

Kumizaki, gold medallists during the São Paulo leg of the 2015 WKF Premier League series, beat Viktoria Semanikova of Slovakia in the final, with team-mates Sabrina Pereira and Julia Hort earning bronze.

Feroldi had earlier sealed the under 50kg crown with victory over Gabriela Bruna of Chile, while the third place finishes in the category went to Aline de Paula and Beatriz Madra, also of Brazil.

A rare final without a Brazilian present saw Ingrida Suchankova defeat Chile's Lavin Javiera Gonzalez to win the female kumite under 61kg category, but the hosts still stepped onto the podium thanks to Erica dos Santos and Stephani de Lima both securing bronze.

Slovakia was the only other nation to clinch a gold medal on day one in Fortaleza.

Dorota Balciarova was adjudged to have given the better display of the kata discipline during her final with Thainan Schopchaki of Brazil, whose compatriots Nicole Mota and Claudina de Souza ended with bronze medals.

The event is due to conclude tomorrow.
