World champion Douglas Brose will bid to end his difficult run of form during this year’s Karate1 Premier League campaign when he competes on home soil at the latest event on the calendar due to get underway at the Gymnasium Paulo Sarasate in Fortaleza tomorrow.

Brose, who competes in the men’s under 60 kilograms kumite division, failed to reach the finals at either the Karate1 Premier League competition in Rotterdam or in Paris.

The 30-year-old did enjoy a successful outing the last time he competed in his home country, however, as he was the star of the show at the Pan American Karate Championships in Rio de Janeiro - which hosted last month's Olympic Games - in May.

He also dominated his category at the Karate1 Premier League event held in São Paulo last year, where Brazil topped the medal table with a haul of 25.

As many as 100 Brazilian karatekas are set to take to the mat over the two days of competition, with the World Karate Federation (WKF) sanctioned event in the Brazilian city due to conclude on Sunday (September 18).

Vinicius Figueira is another competitor from the South American nation who will be hoping to harness the energy from the home crowd when he competes in the men’s under 67kg kumite weight class.

He won a gold medal at the Karate1 Premier League competition in Salzburg in Austria earlier in 2016 and placed sixth in Istanbul two weeks ago.

European Championships silver medallist runner-up Alisa Buchinger, a gold medallist in her home event in Salzburg, comes into the women’s under 68kg kumite as the favourite.

The Austrian will be keen to lay down a marker with the World Championships in Linz, due to take place from October 25 to 30, just around the corner.

The competition in Fortaleza is the second Karate1 Premier League event to be staged since the sport was officially added to the Olympic programme for Tokyo 2020.

Karate will make its debut at the Games in the country which is considered the spiritual home of the sport.
