Britain's Michael Phillips, a World Championship silver medallist, has died, the National Ice Skating Association (NISA) has announced.

The former ice dancer partnered Linda Shearman to the silver medal at the World Championships in Cortina d’Ampezzo in 1963.

The event was won by Czechoslovakia's defending champions Eva Romanová and Pavel Roman.

They came from behind to retain title after being defeated in the compulsory dances by Shearman and Phillips, who had defeated the Czech pair at the European Championships earlier that year.

The pair also won the gold medal at the European Championships in Budapest in 1963, having won a silver at Geneva in 1962 and bronze at Berlin in 1961.

Phillips and Shearman also won the British Championships in 1962 and 1963.

"Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time," the NISA said in a statement.
