Top seeds Mohamed Elshorbagy and Laura Massaro claimed the men's and women's singles titles in straight sets on a day of mixed fortunes for Egypt at the China Squash Open in Shanghai.

Elshorbagy took just 33 minutes to win the men's final over France's defending champion Gregory Gaultier.

The Egyptian world number one pulled away in the second half of the first set to win 11-5.

His intensity and power continued to prove too much for the Frenchman as he cruised home 11-5, 11-3, 11-3.

"I'm really happy to win here today, especially as I lost in the first round last year," he told squashsite afterwards.

"Some days Greg's too good but today it was my turn.

"It's early in the season and I'm sure we'll have some more great battles later on."

It came at the end of a good advertisement for the sport in front of an audience including Chinese basketball superstar Yao Ming.

Elshorbagy's 18-year-old compatriot Nouran Gohar had proven unable to claim victory in the earlier women's final as England's Massaro captured her first China Open title.

Massaro took an 8-3 lead in the first game before being pegged back to 8-8.

The Englishwomen, who lost to Gohar at the recent Hong Kong Open, prevailed 11-9.

She then swept through the next two games 11-5 and 11-3.

"We've played each other a lot recently and we both always leave everything on court," Massaro said.

"Nouran's an amazing player for her age.

"I'll keep on taking the wins while I still can!"
