A mini Commonwealth Games Village was due to be set-up in the city's Pier Head today offering people the opportunity to try out several new sports.

Among those due to attend was former Everton striker Graeme Sharp, a newly-appointed ambassador for the city's bid. 

Due to a bad weather forecast, however, the event has been postponed until a future date.

"The latest forecast shows there will be heavy rain and blustery conditions at the Pier Head on Saturday afternoon," a spokeswoman for Liverpool City Council said. 

"Rather than risk a complete washout we have decided to postpone the mini Commonwealth Games event.

"We are sorry for any inconvenience and will let people know when it is rearranged."

Liverpool announced officially last month that they will bid for the 2026 Commonwealth Games. 

They hope the enthusiasm generated by the success of Team GB at last month's Olympic Games would also have encouraged people to come along to today's event. 

A total of nine sports were due to on offer in the shadow of the city’s world-famous Three Graces including athletics, cycling, gymnastics, hockey and tennis.

The event was due to be sponsored by promotional merchandise firm Wild Thang, who were providing the medals and winners t shirts. 

"As a local business we were proud to hear Liverpool was intending to bid for the Commonwealth Games," said a spokeswoman for the company.

"The potential is huge to make a difference, creating further regeneration and promoting positive sporting lifestyle choices to the people in our region and beyond."
