Norwegian duo Heidi Weng and Petter Northug claimed victory in the women's and men's events at the annual Toppidrettsveka festival, held in Aure and Trondheim.

The event, first established in 2005, ran in the Scandinavian country from August 18 to 20.

Weng, a two-time world champion and Olympic 15 kilometres bronze medallist at Sochi 2014, secured victory in the last women's competition, which was changed from a pursuit to a mass start by the jury in order to make it a "more exciting race".

The Norwegian clocked an overall time of 1hr 02min 08.8sec to ensure she topped the podium ahead of compatriot Emilie Kristoffersen, who was over 3 minutes adrift in second place.

Italy's Ilaria Debertolis, a member of the team which finished eighth in the relay race at the Sochi 2014 Winter Games, ended the Toppidrettsveka in third having completed the event 4:05 behind the leader.

Weng also won the sprint 1.5km classic earlier on at the festival, while she also took victory in the 12km mass start classic.

The only other competitor to win an event was Barbro Kvaale, who triumphed in the sprint 1.5km free race.

Northug, a double Olympic champion who has no fewer than 13 World Championship gold medals to his name, had a comfortable advantage of 25 seconds ahead of the rest of the field going in to last race.

The 30-year-old finished the 15km pursuit classic in 32:47.7, which was three seconds quicker than second-placed skier and team-mate Mattis Stenshagen.

Mikael Gunnulsen, also of Norway, clinched the third spot on the podium.

As well as the cross-country competitions, Toppidrettsveka featured several roller skiing, running and triathlon competitions.
