The Estonian Olympic Committee (EOK) has appointed conductor and pianist Kristjan Jarvi as an ambassador.

The idea behind the appointment is to use music to inspire the European country to future sporting success, it has been reported.

Jarvi becomes the first non-athlete to hold such a role within the governing body.

“It is an honour to be part of the Olympic movement in some small way," he said to Estonian World.

"Music is an inspirational force, it helps people fulfil their potential and in sport this is vital.

"Every sportsman and woman tends to use music in some way to inspire, whether it is in the gym or prior to them starting a race, so it is a natural step to see how this can be expanded upon."

Jarvi was born in Estonia's capital Tallinn but his family moved to the United States when he was seven.

He grew up in New York City and has released more than 60 albums.

Estonia won one medal at the Rio 2016 Olympics, a bronze in rowing for their men's quadruple sculls crew.

The country has won nine gold medals at Summer Olympics and four at Winter Olympics in their history.
