The Dominican Republic Olympic Committee (COD) arranged an "Olympic Walk" ahead of the Rio 2016 Games.

Taking place in Valverde Mao, which is 230 kilometres from the country's capital Santo Domingo, the walk attracted hundreds of people.

At its conclusion there were a range of activities which had been organised by the COD.

The Sports Union of Valverde Mao also collaborated and helped with the event.

Luis Mejia, President of the COD, addressed those who took part - as did the governing body's secretary general Antonio Acosta.

They both reminded the participants about the importance of sport for health and well being.

Their message was particularly emphasised for the youngsters amongst the group in the Caribbean nation.

The Dominican Republic has won three gold medals in its Summer Olympic history, with one at each of the last three editions - Athens 2004, Beijing 2008 and London 2012.

Two of these came thanks to track star Felix Sanchez, who won the men's 400 metre hurdles in both Athens and London.

In Beijing, Manuel Felix Diaz won boxing gold in the light welterweight class.
