The race was held for the 30th year running on Sunday (July 24) at the Hungaroring circuit near Budapest, and proved the city's credentials to host the Games, organisers say.

Attila Mizsér, the director of sports and venues for Budapest 2024, wheeled off a list of encouraging statistics following the Grand Prix, which was won by Britain's defending world champion Lewis Hamilton.

“Hungary is a popular choice for recurring sport events,"said Mizsér.

"The longevity of the Formula One relationship, and the recent resigning of the agreement to take it up to 2026, are testament to this. 

"The Budapest Formula One event has never missed a year in its history. 

"In terms of venue delivery, the venue was completed on time and to budget, in just eight months, less time than any other Formula One circuit. 

"We think statistics such as this give enormous credibility to our bid to host the Olympics in 2024."

The Hungaroring is 20 kilometres north-east of Budapest with a free-bus service provided to ticket holders.

The Hungarian bid is currently considered by many to be the outsider in a 2024 race which also includes Los Angeles, Paris and Rome, but organisers are hopeful the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) Agenda 2020 reforms will work in their favour.

These called for more economical, less expensive Games - which could play into the hands of a smaller city using existing venues.

Budapest 2024 chairman Balázs Fürjes dismissed suggestions that the capital is the outside bet when speaking to insidethegames in April.

A host will be elected at the IOC Session in Peru's capital Lima next year.
