Candace Hill became the first American winner of the women’s World Junior Championship 100 metre title since Jeneba Tarmoh in 2008 in Bydgoszcz in Poland today.

Hill was level until 80 metres with Pole Ewa Swoboda but pulled away to win in 11.07sec, a new Championship record.

“My goal was to win and finally bring the title home,” said Hill.

“I wanted to beat the championship record and 11.07 is perfect for it.”

Swoboda hung on for silver in 11.12 with Khalifa St Fort clinching bronze for Trinidad and Tobago in 11.18.

In the women’s 400m, Jamaica’s Tiffany James became the first from her country to win the title with a time of 51.32.

She edged American Lynna Irby who clocked 51.39 and another Jamaican, Junelle Bromfield, who managed 52.05.

There was a US 1-2 in the men’s 110m hurdles, as Marcus Krah’s 13.25 led home compatriot Amere Lattin who was timed at 13.30.

Takuma Furuya of Japan came home in 13.31 for bronze.

The Championships were initially supposed to be held in Kazan, but they were stripped of hosting rights by the IAAF last year after Russia's suspension for widespread doping.
