The University of Montpellier triumphed in the women’s football final at the European Universities Games (EUG) in Croatia after thrashing the University of Valencia in a one sided match.

Valérie Gauvin proved the star for the French team as she opened the scoring in the ninth minute of the encounter, before doubling her tally just eight minutes later.

The goals continued to flow as Morgane Courteille fired in a third as the tie approached the half hour mark, with Gauvin then completing her hat-trick moments later.

With the score standing at 4-0 at half-time, there proved no way back for the University of Valencia, who were happy to play out a goalless second half.

The University of Marburg earned the bronze medal, with the Germans sealing a 2-1 win over the Russian based Ural Federal University.

In contrast to the women’s final, the men’s proved to be a tight fought affair with Portugal's University of Minho eventually emerging as 2-1 winners over the University of Bochum from Germany.

Croatian fans were denied the chance to see one of their universities claim a football medal, as University J.J.Strossmayera of Osijek were convincingly beaten 3-0 by Russia’s Kuban State University.

Erasmus University Rotterdam were crowned men’s tennis champions, with Stefan De Jong winning his singles rubber and then the doubles match with Bart Van Den Berg to give them a 2-1 win over the University of Innsbruck.

Kozminski University from Poland beat the Istanbul Aydin University 2-1 in the bronze medal tie.

In the women’s competition, Claudia Gaspar and Barbara Luz won their singles matches to give the University of Coimbra a 2-0 victory over the University of Mainz in the gold medal contest.

The University of Bordeaux triumphed by the same scoreline against the University of Stirling to win bronze.
