Mike Day has returned to the United States ski team as women's head coach.

The former men's technical coach will specifically work with Mikaela Shiffrin, the Olympic slalom champion from Sochi 2014.

His reappointment comes after the previous women's technical head coach Brandon Dyksterhouse announced his resignation.

Day previously coached Ted Ligety, a double Olympic champion, when he worked as men's technical coach between 2010 and 2013.

He will now link up with the American squad in New Zealand.

"I am excited to be back with the US ski team," Day said.

"Mikaela is an amazing talent and an inspiring person.

"I look forward to joining her exceptional team next week in New Zealand."

Twenty-one-year-old Shiffrin won five International Ski Federation (FIS) World Cup races during the 2015-16 season but missed nine weeks of the campaign due to a serious knee injury.

Patrick Riml, the US ski team Alpine director, said: "Mike Day is an experienced leader and great coach who has worked very successfully with the US ski team in the past, as well as with GMVS, one of the leading academy programs in America.

"He made a difference for the team in the past, especially with Ted Ligety.

"It will be great to have an American coach back in the system.

"We are thankful to Steve Utter and GMVS for the support as Mike transitions to our programme to coach Mikaela Shiffrin in this important Olympic cycle."
