All those competing at the third edition of the event participated in the ceremonial parade, representing universities from all across Europe.

Action took place in a number of sports today, including basketball, football, handball, rugby sevens and water polo.

In Group A of the men’s basketball competition, the University of Debrecen beat the University of Wurzburg 89-53 to bounce back from their narrow 65-63 loss against Tilburg University yesterday.

The University of Bologna were aiming to make it two wins out of two in the same pool but suffered a 86-68 defeat at the hands of the University of Zagreb.

The University of Zagreb also tasted victory in Group A of the women’s basketball competition, overcoming Mykolas Romeris University 74-57 to make it two wins in as many matches.

The University "1 Decembrie 1918" Alba Iulia had earlier defeated the University of Groningen 100-66 and will now go on to face the home favourites tomorrow in a group decider.

Around 5,000 athletes from 300 universities are competing in the EUG in Rijeka and Zagreb. 

"Students, these Games were created for you," said Adam Roczek, President of the European University Sports Association, during the Opening Ceremony.

"Your talent and commitment brought you here.

"Compete with passion in a fair play manner, respect your opponents - your sport fellows on and off the pitch, meet friends, enjoy every minute of your stay here."
