Gourette in France has been awarded the 2017 Inas World Skiing Championships and Australia will stage the organisation’s General Assembly in the same year, it has been announced.

Inas - the International Federation for sport for Para-athletes with an intellectual disability - confirmed the destination of two of its major events during Global ID Sports Week.

The Week is aimed at raising awareness of sport for intellectually disabled athletes and celebrating their success across the world.

The Pyrenean resort of Gourette will play host to the 10th edition of the Inas World Skiing Championships, with the event scheduled to take place from March 27 to April 1.

Competitions are set to be held in both Alpine and Nordic disciplines.

Home favourite Antoine Maure is likely to be one of the headline names in action as he will bid to claim his second consecutive men’s slalom gold, though he is expected to be strongly challenged by athletes from Japan and Austria.

France previously staged the World Skiing Championships in 2011 Lans-en-Vercors.

“France truly is pleased to host the next Inas World Alpine and Nordic Skiing championships in 2017,” said Organising Committee President Jean-Claude Ribert.

“The Fédération Française du Sport Adapté conveys its deepest gratitude to Inas for this sign of trust.”

Inas has confirmed 2019 Global Games host Brisbane will hold the governing body’s General Assembly in 2017, the largest gathering of those within the organisation.

“The Assembly provides an excellent opportunity for members to meet with the Local Organising Committee directly, to tour venues, and begin to lay plans for what will be a fantastic event in 2019,” Inas executive director Nick Parr said.

A number of events and activities were held during the Global ID Sports Week, including the 2016 the INAS Open Athletics Championships in Ankara.

Teams from France, Croatia, The Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Ukraine and Poland were among the competitors.
