Defending champions United States beat The Netherlands in straight sets as final six action began in the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) World Grand Prix in Bangkok.

The world number one side, who are also the world champions and Olympic silver medallists, came home 25-21, 25-17, 25-23 as the conclusion to the showpiece women's tournament began in the Thai capital.

The Americans are seen as favourites to win the competition again after sweeping to eight victories in their nine preliminary round matches.

Foluke Akinradewo scored a match-high 16 points for the US today, while Lonneke Sloetjes tallied 15 points for the Netherlands at the Indoor Stadium Huamark.

USA coach Karch Kiraly said: “It’s always a great day when we get to play with a great team and wonderful coaching staff.

"We have a great deal of respect towards Giovanni Guidetti and his staff.

"We look forward to our match against China on Friday.

"We will try to improve.”

In the only other match to be played on opening day, Brazil beat hosts Thailand with another straight sets victory.

The London 2012 Olympic champions are a big home hope for gold at the Rio 2016 Games next month and disappointed the Thai fans by winning 26-24, 25-16, 25-11.

Natalia Pereira delivered 23 points for Brazil while Ajcharaporn Kongyot best performed for Thailand with 14 points.

Brazil coach Jose Roberto Lages Guimaraes said: “Thailand have improved a lot.

"They are stronger as I have observed them during the Olympic qualification.

"We had to use more energy to play against them.

"They almost won the first set, so we have to put more effort in the succeeding sets.

"We were stronger in the second set because they blocked less, so it made it easier for us to win the match.

"I commend Thailand and the organisers for this very good match."

Brazil will play their second match tomorrow against Russia, with China playing The Netherlands in the second game.
