Eight members of Cuba’s men’s volleyball team have been arrested in Finland on suspicion of aggravated rape.

The team had been in Finland to take part in their latest round of fixtures in the men’s International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) World League competition, with matches against Canada, Portugal and the host nation taking place at the Tampere Ice Stadium.

It has now been alleged that an incident took place in a Tampere hotel, where the team were staying.

Just one victim has been interviewed.

The FIVB has told insidethegames it is "very concerned by the alleged serious misconduct by members of the Cuban National volleyball team".

Central Finland Police Department Inspector Joni Länsipuro has confirmed that three men were detained on Saturday, with a further five then arrested yesterday (July 3).

Four of the players had been arrested after their match against Portugal, which ended in a 25-19, 22-25, 25-19, 20-25, 15-9 victory.

A decision on whether the suspects will be placed under formal arrest by the police is set to be made tomorrow.

"I have not made this decision yet," Länsipuro said yesterday, according to Yle News.

"When the prosecutor comes to work on Monday [today], we'll discuss this."

"It is quite natural that they most likely will not be able to leave Finland on Monday as planned."

The Cuban team are set to compete at next month’s Rio 2016 Olympic Games, after they triumphed at the North American Qualification tournament in January.

They are due to meet Argentina, Egypt, Iran, Poland and Russian in Group B of the competition, while Group A consists of Canada, France, Italy, Mexico, the United States and hosts Brazil.

The FIVB World League matches have proved one of their final opportunities to prepare for the Games, but despite their win over Portugal they had been beaten by Canada and Finland.

After the arrest of eight members of their team, uncertainty will now remain over the participation of the players involved in the incident.

It has also been claimed that the Finnish police made the statement about the arrests to reduce speculation that players had defected or gone missing.

"The FIVB is very concerned by the alleged serious misconduct by members of the Cuban National volleyball team and is in close touch with all parties involved," an FIVB spokesman told insidethegames.

"The FIVB has absolute zero tolerance of any offence committed against another person by any players or officials at an FIVB event.

"Whilst the FIVB adheres to the presumption of innocence until proven guilty, we expect all participants now to respect the due process and ultimate decision of the local and national authorities.

"The FIVB expects all stakeholders in worldwide volleyball to adhere to our values based on volleyball being the world's number one family sport entertainment."
