First-half goals from Olivier Giroud, Paul Pogba, Dimitri Payet and Antoine Griezmann killed the game as a contest and all-but guaranteed a meeting with World Cup winners Germany in the last four. 

Kolbeinn Sigthorsson gave the minnows the feintest hope of an unlikely comeback when he pulled one back early in the second half but Giroud restored France's four-goal lead with his second of the match almost instantaneously.

Iceland once again displayed their spirit and character and scored again late on through Birkir Bjarnason as they bowed out of the competition on a positive note.

Despite the convincing nature of the defeat, the Icelandic team will depart Euro 2016 with their heads held high following a remarkable showing which belied their lowly stature within international football.

The hosts got off to the perfect start when Giroud broke the deadlock 12 minutes in after he latched on to a perfectly-weighted lofted pass from Blaise Matuidi and drove a left-footed strike into the corner of the net.

France doubled their advantage shortly after as Juventus midfielder Pogba rose highest to head home a Griezmann corner, leaving the unfancied Icelandic side with a mountain to climb before the midway point of the first half.

Iceland then came close to halving the deficit as Jon Dadi Bodvarsson steered a tough chance over the bar in a move which was a carbon copy of the one that led to their first goal in their shock round of 16 victory over England.

It was to get worse for Iceland in the dying embers of the first-half as they conceded twice in a matter of minutes.

Payet found space on the edge of the box and placed a well-directed shot low into the right-hand corner, before Griezmann rounded-off a superb French move with a delicious chip over the onrushing goalkeeper Hannes Thor Halldorsson.

Shortly after the restart, Sigthorsson converted Gylfi Sigurdsson's trademark front post delivery to reduce Iceland's arrears but it proved to be a fleeting moment of joy as Giroud scored a header three minutes later.

France seemed as though they would add to their tally every time they went forward but it was Iceland who netted the game's seventh and final goal as Bjarnason glanced Ari Skulason's pinpoint delivery beyond Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.
