The introduction of the Kunlun Red Star ice hockey team into the Kontinental Hockey League has been hailed as a valuable opportunity to develop Chinese players ahead of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games.

Last week it was revealed that the Beijing based team would feature in the international league, which currently boasts team from Belarus, Croatia, Finland, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Russia and Slovakia.

An agreement was signed in the presence of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

It has now been revealed that the team will compete in the LeSports Arena in the city, which was constructed to stage basketball competition at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

The 18,000 seat venue, though, will become accustom to hosting ice hockey competition, as it is due to host the sport at the 2022 Winter Olympic Games.

Finland’s Tomi Karhunen and Janne Jalasvaara have already been confirmed as the first additions to the team, which will be led by veteran coach Vladimir Yurzinov.

It is expected that the foreign imports will help to make the team competitive in the league, while domestic talent will be given the opportunity to develop in the forthcoming seasons.

“I think it’s a good step before the 2022 Olympics in Beijing,” said International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) President René Fasel.

“Even if we don’t see a lot of Chinese players on that team right away, it’s a great promotion for the sport in Asia.

“A strong China helps to build a strong Asia and it’s good that the KHL is doing this.”

The IIHF hope the team’s participation in the league will help to boost the country’s national team, which were fell at the opening stage of qualification for the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics.

China fell to defeats to Spain, Iceland and Serbia in the opening competition, with the latter advancing to the pre-qualification tournament.

It has also been claimed that 10,000 teenagers in Beijing are also set to receive free coaching as they look to build their national team.
