United States’ Clarence Cummings Jr broke the clean and jerk and overall youth world records on his way to winning the men’s 69 kilograms gold medal on day three of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) Junior World Championships in Tbilisi. 

Despite ranking four in the snatch with a lift of 137kg, the 16-year-old recovered to set a youth worth world record of 175kg in the clean and jerk before bettering it again with 180kg.

Cummings’ total of 317kg was also a youth world record, putting him top of the podium ahead of Japan’s Mitsunori Konnai and Masanori Miyamoto in second and third respectively.

Konnai, Miyamoto and fourth-placed Ahmet Turan Okyay of Turkey were only separated by bodyweight after all three finished with a total of 305kg.

Okyay headed the snatch standings with 139kg, followed by Konnai with 138kg and Colombia’s Jose David Mosquera Lozano with 137kg.

Miyamoto came closest to matching Cummings’ mark in the clean and jerk, posting 170kg to finish just ahead of Egypt’s Moustafa Wahid Shaaban Ibrahim who managed 168kg.

In the women’s 53kg, 2013 youth world champion Linglong Yu of China won overall gold despite having to settle for silver in the snatch and the clean and jerk.

The 15-year-old’s lift of 91kg in the snatch and 115kg in the clean and jerk gave her an unrivalled total of 206kg as Thailand’s Rattanaphon Pakkaratha and Supattra Kaewkhong came second and third with 201kg and 195kg respectively.

Latvia’s Rebeka Koha, bronze medallist at this year’s European Championships won the snatch with 92kg, however, she could only finish fourth in the clean and jerk with 103kg and missed out on overall honours.

Pakkaratha, the 2014 Youth Olympic champion, finished fourth in the snatch with 85kg before bouncing back to win the clean and jerk with 116kg. 

She attempted 122kg in a bid to secure overall gold, but failed to lift it. 

Kaewkhong’s third-place finish overall came after bronze medal-winning lifts of 88kg and 107kg in the snatch and clean and jerk respectively.
