Holders Serbia advanced to the quarter-final stage of the International Swimming Federation (FINA) men’s Water Polo World League Super Final as Group B winners after beating the United States in the battle for top spot.

Both sides went into the match having won their opening two matches at the Huizhou Jinshan Lake Swimming and Diving Hall, but it was the Serbians who prevailed 10-8 to preserve their unblemished record.

Victory sets up a last-eight clash with Japan after their 17-10 defeat at the hands of Italy ensured they finished bottom of Group A without a single point. 

Italy ended up second behind Greece, who made it a perfect three wins out of three with a 10-5 success over Australia.

Awaiting them in the quarter-finals are hosts China, the fourth-place finishers in Group B following a 15-13 loss against Brazil.

The game was tied at 11-11 after normal time with Brazil going on to win the shootout 4-2 to take third spot.

"It was a good lesson for us to learn something from the shootout," said China captain Liang Zhongxing. 

"We really hope to win a game at the Super Final."

Tomorrow’s two other quarter-final ties are due to Australia face the US and Italy go up against Brazil with all eight teams advancing to the knock-out round.

Semi-final action is scheduled for the following day, before the competition concludes with the gold and bronze medal matches on Sunday (June 26).
