Dame Sarah Storey has been selected to compete at her seventh Paralympic Games after the British Paralympic Association named her in Britain’s cycling squad for Rio 2016.

The 38-year-old, a 12-time Para-world cycling champion on the track, will look to add to the 11 Paralympic gold medals she has claimed throughout her career across swimming and cycling events.

Dame Sarah will hope to achieve similar success to her home Paralympic Games in London, where she earned four gold medals in C5 classification events.

“I’m delighted to be picked for my seventh Paralympic Games,” she said.

“It’s just as exciting to be named in the team today as it was for my first Games in Barcelona back in 1992.

“London 2012 was incredible; to win four gold medals at a home Games was a once in a lifetime experience but I can’t wait to get to Rio and hopefully enjoy some more success alongside my ParalympicsGB team mates.”

Five-time Paralympic champion Jody Cundy will be appearing in his sixth Paralympics having been named in team, while David Stone will compete his fourth Games.

After earning two gold medals at the 2015 International Cycling Union (UCI) Para-Cycling World Championships, Megan Giglia has been selected to make her Paralympic debut in Rio.

Karen Darke, Hannah Dines and Jon-Allan Butterworth, who earned three silver medals at London 2012, are all included in the squad.

In the visually impaired events the British team will be represented by three-time world champions Neil Fachie and pilot Pete Mitchell, as well as Stephen Bate and Adam Duggleby.

Sophie Thornhill and Lora Turnham will compete in the women’s competitions, with the duo set to be piloted by Helen Scott and Corrine Hall respectively.

“The riders have all earned their place in the squad with some excellent performances on the track and the road over the last couple of years,” said Jon Pett, British Cycling Para-cycling programme manager and ParalympicsGB team leader.

“We have a great blend of riders in the team, from some with significant Paralympic Games experience to those who will be competing at a Games for the first time.

“We’re very confident that the team that has been selected will be ready to give everything they’ve got to deliver success in Rio for ParalympicsGB.”

A second team announcement is due to take place prior to the Games, where the final places on the cycling team are due to be announced.
