Sixteen countries will begin their challenge for just one available place in the men’s rugby sevens tournament at Rio 2016 tomorrow, with the Olympic qualification tournament beginning in Monaco.

Pacific nation Samoa are the top ranked side from this year’s World Rugby Sevens Series not to have already qualified, and will be among the favourites at the Stade Louis II.

The Samoans came ninth in the Sevens Series, but are in a tough Pool A which includes Pacific rivals Tonga, XVs rugby union powerhouse Ireland and Zimbabwe.

All pool games will be played tomorrow with the top two progressing from four groups into Sunday’s (June 19) knock-out phase.

Group B features Canada, Germany, Uruguay and Sri Lanka with Russia, Chile, Morocco and Tunisia contesting Group C.

Sevens will be making its Olympic debut in Rio and the world governing body are keen to spread the sport to all corners of the globe.

Fiji, Great Britain, New Zealand, South Africa, Argentina, United States, France, Japan, Australia and Kenya have already qualified for Rio alongside hosts Brazil.

A women’s qualification tournament will also take place at Dublin's UCD Bowl on June 25 and 26.

Bernard Lapasset, the outgoing World Rugby chairman who will be replaced by Bill Beaumont before the Games on July 1, said: “With its blend of star players, exciting, competitive action and fan-centered carnival atmosphere, rugby sevens is set to rock Rio and I would encourage anyone who is yet to experience the sport to get online, get a ticket and get over to the Deodoro Stadium.”

Frenchman Lapasset did not seek re-election to focus on his role with the Paris bid for the 2024 Olympics and Paralympics.
