Bulgaria’s Ruzhdi Ruzhdi and Britain's Jo Butterfield were among the record-breakers as another four world marks bit the dust on the penultimate day of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Athletics European Championships in Grosseto.

Butterfield produced one of the performances of the Championships, breaking the women’s F31/32/51 club throw world record three times on her way to the gold.

The reigning world champion threw 22.18 metres and 22.39m before rounding off a superb display with an effort of 22.75m, leading home a British clean sweep as team-mates Gemma Prescott and Abbie Hunnisett claimed silver and bronze respectively.

Ruzhdi, who won gold at last year’s World Championships, took the men's F55 shot put European title by throwing the furthest distance ever recorded as he managed 12.04m.

The throw from the Bulgarian saw him add the shot put crown to the discus gold he won on Saturday (June 11).

Russia’s Sofia Oksem was also able to set a world record during the evening session as she threw 47.40m in the second round of the women's F11/12 discus, adding 1.43m on to her previous mark, achieved on her way to silver at the European Championships in Swansea two years ago.

Earlier on the fifth day of the event in the Italian city, Germany’s multiple world and Paralympic champion Birgit Kober broke the women's F35/36 shot put world record with a best effort of 11.20m.

It capped the perfect build-up to the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games for the 44-year-old, who missed out on competing at last year's World Championships in Doha due to health reasons.

In the eagerly-anticipated men's T44 100m final, Britain's Jonnie Peacock, the reigning Paralympic gold medallist, edged fierce rival Felix Streng of Germany, clocking 11.18 to secure the title by just 0.02 seconds.

Italian star Martina Caironi, the women's T42 100m Paralympic champion, marked her return from injury in style by winning the European title in her preferred event.

The London 2012 gold medallist and current world champion didn't disappoint the home crowd at the Carlo Zecchini Olympic Stadium as she clocked 15.80 to secure the crown despite running into a -4.0m/s headwind.

"Today I just could not let anybody down," she said.

"The time I set was not my best, I wanted to run in less than 15 seconds, but I always demand too much from myself, considering it has been my first race of this season."

Finland’s Paralympic champion Leo Pekka Tahti, like Caironi, had also been plagued by injury troubles of late but he shrugged off any concerns on his way to the men's T54 gold medal in a time of 14.43.

"I am very very happy now because I wasn’t sure if I would participate,” he said.

“I didn’t take any risks out there, and there is still quite a big margin between me and silver medallist, so I’m very happy.

"I just need to thank my physio who did a great job on my elbow for me to race.

"Now I just need to take some rest and it will be okay after one week.”

The event in Grosseto concludes tomorrow.
