Haiti, Honduras, Nepal and the Central African Republic are set to be represented in taekwondo competition at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games after being offered invitational places.

The World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) offered the places, the final four up for grabs, to the nations after the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) Tripartite Commission came to a verdict after weighing up a variety of different criteria.

Among the criteria considered were the technical ability of the country’s athletes, their economic background and the size of their delegations at previous Olympic Games.

The invitational places were also designed to increase the universality of taekwondo competition at the Games.

Haiti’s Aniya Louissaint was chosen to receive the berth in the women’s under 67 kilogram competition, while Nepal’s Nisha Rawal will represent her nation in the over 67kg event.

Two places in men’s divisions were also awarded, with Miguel Adrian Ferrera Rodriguez set to represent Honduras in the under 80kg event, while the Central African Republic’s David Boui has received the under 68kg spot.

Rodriguez previously competed at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, where he was chosen as Honduras' flagbearer, while Boui made his Games debut at London 2012.

“I am delighted to see such a wide spread of nations represented on the taekwondo competition mats at the 2016 Olympic Games,” said Chungwon Choue, WTF President.

“Our sport has broken every barrier of gender, race, class and creed, and I am confident that our athletes will rock Rio with a ‘festival of fight’ this summer.”

A total of 53 National Olympic Committees had presented 78 candidates to the IOC Tripartite Commission for the four places available.

Following their award, a total of 128 athletes from 63 countries will be represented in taekwondo competition at the Games, with four men’s and women’s weight divisions due to be contested.
