Russia's Margarita Goncharova was among four world record-breakers at the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Athletics European Championships as she smashed her own T38 200 metres mark to clinch gold in Italian city Grosseto today.

Goncharova ran 0.15 seconds quicker than her performance during last year's World Championships in Doha as she clocked 26.46sec to finish comfortably clear of British duo Sophie Hann and Kadeena Cox, silver and bronze medallists respectively.

"I am shocked, I did not expect this at all, I can’t believe I have won and set the new world record, my last competitions were bad so I am so much happier today," the victorious Russian said.

Earlier on the second day of the event, a key competition in the build-up to the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, Poland’s Arleta Meloch won the gold medal in the T20 800m to lay claim to the first world record to be broken out on the track at the  Carlo Zecchini Olympic Stadium.

She stopped the clock at 2min 18.10sec, nearly four seconds faster than compatriot  Barbara Niewiedzial managed at Doha 2015.

Bernadett Biacsi of Hungary took silver, while bronze went the way of Mariia Koltcova of Russia.

World silver medallist Noelle Lenihan of Ireland added 50 centimetres on to the F38 discus world record, throwing 32.14 metres to oust Eva Berna of the Czech Republic and Russia's Irina Vertinskaya.

The other world record to bite the dust today came in the men's F13 javelin as Branimir Budetic of Croatia threw 65.74 metres, two centimetres further than he managed on his way to the world title in the Qatari capital in October.

His effort saw him add the European crown to his world gold, with Spain's Hector Cabrera Llacer sealing silver and Nemanja Dimitrijevic of Serbia doing enough for bronze.

Elsewhere on a packed day of action in Grosseto, Paralympic and world champion Markus Rehm extended his vast collection of gold medals by successfully defending his European crown with a Championship record leap of 7.98 metres.

The German, who still hopes to be cleared to compete alongside able-bodied athletes at Rio 2016, which would see him become only the second competitor to represent his nation at both the Olympics and Paralympics using blades, topped the podium ahead of team-mate Felix Streng and Jean-Baptiste Alaize of France.

Britain's David Weir, the six-time Paralympic champion, took the men's T54 5,000m title thanks to a perfectly-time sprint in the final 50 metres of the race.

Weir clocked 11:15.95 to leave Russia’s Aleksei Bychenok and Germany’s Alhassane Balde in his wake and secure his first world or European title since London 2012.

His triumph was one of seven British golds on day two.

Moatez Jomni won the T53 200m in a championship record of 26.64, while Maria Lyle secured the women's T35 100m crown in 14.45, also a Championship record.

Further British success came in the men's T54 200m thanks to Richard Chiassaro's Championship record time of 25.14, with Richard Whitehead following suit in setting a new best mark at the event as he took the tape in the T42 100m in 12.21

Dan Greaves emerged triumphant in the men's F44-46 discus by throwing 58.15 and Aled Davies added to the haul of British Championship records by recording a best effort of 16.11 in the men's F42 shot put.

Action at the 2016 IPC Athletics European Championships continues tomorrow.
