Sweden’s Stefan Nilsson brought the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Shotgun World Cup in San Marino to a close by earning gold in the men’s skeet event at the Tiro a Volo San Marino Shooting Range.

Italy’s Tammaro Cassandro proved the star of the early stages of the competition by equalling the world record for qualification, as the 23-year-old hit all 125 targets to reach the semi-final.

Nilsson battled through a shoot-off to earn a place in next round after eight men finished level on 122.

The quality remained high after Cassandro, Nilsson and Denmark’s Jesper Hansen achieved 100 per cent records in the semi-final, but the Danish shooter eventually faltered after scoring only three hits to his rivals' four in the shoot-off.

Cassandro, after a superb display for much of the competition, faltered in the early stages of the gold medal contest by missing two targets but hit back to force Nilsson into his third shoot-off of the day.

The Swedish shooter held his nerve to hit six targets to Cassandro’s five to claim the second World Cup title of his career.

“I went through a big shoot-off after the qualifications, and it was surprisingly short, after three doubles I was in,” Nilsson reflected after his victory.

“I passed again through another shoot-off to get into the gold medal match, but I was in a good mood after a perfect 16 in the semi-final, and I was pretty stable right to the end

“It feels great to win my second World Cup gold.

“I have been into three finals in my career, I won two, and claimed a silver, so I have a strong confidence when I make it into finals."

America’s Vincent Hancock, the gold medallist at the Beijing and London 2012 Olympic Games, earned the final place on the podium by beating Hansen in the bronze medal contest.

The 27-year-old triumphed 16-14 to claim the minor medal.
