Several of Australia's up and coming players have advanced to the main draw of the event at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre.

These include 18-year-old Jake Duffy who beat Chinese Taipei's Li-Wei Chen 9-11,11-3, 8-11, 11-7, 11-8, 9-11,11-9 to secure top spot in his qualification pool.

“I was a bit nervous, but I had a much better serve which he struggled with,” Duffy said.

“There were some good rallies, I just focused on trying to get a bit quicker.”

Seventeen-year-olds Xavier Dixon and Rohan Dhooria are also through for Australia, as well as 18-year-old Ivan Sulfaro.

Elsewhere, France's Fabrice Balazi topped his pool without dropping a set, as did Japan's Masaki Takami and Yuki Morita, Malaysia’s Chee Feng Leong and Panama’s Omer Avi-Tal.

In the women's competition, Australia's Melissa Tapper, who in March became the first from the country to qualify to compete at both the Olympic and Paralympic Games, went down to Chinese Taipei's Nai-I Hsiung who triumphed 9-11,11-6,11-9,11-3,5-11,8-11,11-6.

Despite the loss Tapper still progresses to the main draw after two wins yesterday.

Japan's Yuka Minagawa and Yuka Umemura did not drop a set in qualifying as they went through.
