Ratchanok Intanon kept her bid for a fourth Badminton World Federation (BWF) Super Series title this season alive by breezing into the quarter-finals in Australia today.

The Thai player brushed aside Hong Kong's Yip Pui Yin 21-7, 21-9 to set up a last eight date with India's Saina Newahl.

Intanon, the Super Series winner in India, Malaysia and Singapore this term, is the second seed at the Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre but top-ranked Spaniard Carolina Marin, the defending champion, has withdrawn.

The 21-year-old won the World Championships in 2013 and is a big hope for Thai gold at Rio 2016.

Newahl, the London 2012 Olympic bronze medallist, booked her passage through by seeing off Goh Jin Wei of Malaysia 21-12, 21-14.

China's third seed Li Xuerui advanced by ousting Vu Thi Trang of Vietnam 21-11, 21-11 while another Chinese - fourth seed Wang Yihan - went through after getting the better of Tanvi Lad of India 21-18, 21-6.

In the men's draw, world champion and top seed Chen Long looks well placed to defend his title after making the last eight.

The Chinese beat Malaysia's Zulfadli Zulkiffli 21-17, 21-12 and is the only of the top eight seeds left in the draw after two first round exits and five withdrawals.

He will play Indonesia's Anthony Sinisuka Ginting in the quarter-finals after he came from behind to knock out India's Sameer Verma 11-21, 21-7, 21-19.

South Korean qualifier Heo Kwang-hee is also still in the frame after China's Wang Zhengming retired in the third game of their clash.

The Korean won an epic first 30-29 before conceding the second 21-12.

He led 11-2 in the decider before Wang withdrew through injury.

Hans-Kristian Vittinghus, a member of Denmark's Thomas Cup winning side, will be the only non-Asian player in the last eight after he saw off England's Rajiv Ouseph 21-19, 20-22, 21-16.
