Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Rajah Menuri Venkata Gurusaidutt booked his place in the men’s draw at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Australian Open by earning two qualifying wins in the Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre.

India's Gurusaidutt, who peaked in the world rankings at 19 back in 2013, showed his ability by ending the challenge of home favourite Michael Fariman to move closer to reaching the first round of the Super Series event.

The 26-year-old triumphed 21-7 in the opening game of the contest and despite his Australian opponent battling strongly, came through to win the second 21-14.

Malaysia's Jian Shiarng Chiang was next to fall to Gurusaidutt, with the Indian player claiming a 21-16, 21-12 victory to advance to the main draw.

He will now take on Hong Kong’s Hu Yun, who enjoyed a run to the quarter-finals of the Indonesian Open last week.

Australia’s Huaidong Tang also reached the first round of the men’s competition after recording a 24-22, 21-19 win over his compatriot Nathan Tang.

The result will see the 18-year-old face world number one and defending champion Chen Long, with the Chinese star tipped as the overwhelming favourite to win the tournament due to the absence of his rival Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia.

Australia’s Tiffany Ho reached the women’s singles main draw, following a victory over Pakistan’s Sara Mohamed.

The 18-year-old dominated throughout the duration of the tie to secure a 21-6, 21-7 triumph and set up a clash with Tanvi Lad of India tomorrow.

World number two Ratchanok Intanon is viewed as one of the contenders for the women’s title, with the Thai star due to get her challenge underway with a match against Japan’s Minatsu Mitani.
