Australia’s Emma Cox earned the first International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup gold medal of her career after winning a closely fought women’s trap final with the United States’ Corey Cordell at the Tiro a Volo San Marino Shooting Range today.

The host nation had hoped to make an impact on the opening event of the World Cup through the Pirelli sisters, Arianne and Alessandra, but neither of the duo were able to challenge for a place in the medal rounds.

Competition had proved fierce throughout the duration of the day, with Cox, Cordell and China’s Zhu Jingly eventually finishing the semi-final stage level after hitting 12 of the 15 targets.

Cox and Condell were able to defeat their Chinese opponent in a tense three-way shoot-off in order to advance to the gold medal contest.

Cordell, who won bronze at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, fell short in the final by hitting only 11 targets while Cox, the 2013 Oceania champion, achieved 15.

“My day was pretty cool, I had no expectations, I just came and tried to shoot at my best,” said Cox, who has missed out on securing a place at Rio 2016.

“When I was shooting the final I felt a little bit nervous to begin with but I took it as it came, I tried to relax.

“This is my first world cup gold, it’s great.

“The next big goal would be the Olympics, the next one.”

After failing to reach the final, Zhu was then unable to secure a spot on the podium altogether as she was beaten by France’s Carole Comelier in the bronze medal match.

Comelier was able to defeat her opponent 13-12 in a tightly-fought contest to claim her maiden World Cup medal.

The men’s trap competition is scheduled to take place tomorrow, while the double trap event is due to be held on Monday (June 6) after a rest day.
