Russia claimed the junior team gold medal on the opening day of the 2016 European Women’s Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Switzerland’s capital Bern.

The quintet of Elena Eremina, Anastasiia Iliankova, Uliana Perebinosova, Angelina Simakova and Varvara Zubova posted a total of 168.179 points to finish 4.267 clear at the top.

Great Britain’s Taeja James, Alice Kinsella, Maisie Methuen, Megan Parker and Lucy Stanhope were second with 163.912 points, while Romania’s Alisia Botnaru, Olivia Cimpian, Ioana Crisan, Carmen Ghiciuc and Denisa Golgota came third with 163.678.

The final team ranking was determined from the individual all-around qualification process, which was led by Eremina with 56.732 points.

Iliankova was second with 56.049 points, while Kinsella was third with 55.465.

Eremina was the top qualifier in the vault and floor exercise with scores of 14.533 points and 14.100 respectively.

Iliankova set the standard in the uneven bars with 14.600 points and beam with 14.283. 

The 24 highest-ranked gymnasts from qualification advanced to the all-around final, scheduled for Friday (June 3), and the best eight per apparatus to the event finals, set for Sunday (June 5).

Both were limited to two gymnasts per country.

Action in Bern is due to continue tomorrow with the four senior qualification subdivisions.
