The Para-taekwondo world rankings have been published for June with a number of changes following last month’s African Championships in Port Said in Egypt.

The first-ever edition of the event took place on May 22, attracting 29 athletes from 11 countries.

It was open to participants from all around the world, however, athletes from Africa had the opportunity to win twice as many ranking points as those from other continents.

Morocco’s Mohammed Aatif was one of the main beneficiaries of this, climbing from 13th to sixth in the men’s K44 under 75 kilograms rankings after finishing runner-up to Iran’s Asghar Aziziaghdam.

Uzbekistan's Sarvarjon Obidjonov has risen from ninth to sixth in the men’s K44 over 75kg standings after claiming a bronze medal.

Making the same move in the men's K44 under 61kg rankings is Spain's Santana Santana, thanks to his gold medal-winning performance in Port Said.

Iran finished top of the overall medals table with the country's five golds beating runners-up Morocco’s three and third-placed Spain’s two.

Nigeria, participating in their first international Para-taekwondo event, came fourth with one gold medal and one bronze.

Germany, meanwhile, won their first Para-taekwondo gold medal courtesy of Hasim Celik’s success in the men’s K44 over 75kg category.

A demonstration match was staged ahead of the Championships between Morocco’s Rajae Akermarch, who won silver at the 2015 Para-Taekwondo World Championships in Samsun, and able-bodied Egyptian Hedaya Malak, who has qualified for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games and won the under 57kg title at the 2015 World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) Grand Prix Finals in Mexico City.

The match was held under Para-taekwondo rules with no kicks to the head permitted.
