New Zealand Open winner Huang Yuxiang of China claimed a comfortable victory over home hope Wisnu Yuli Prasetyo to reach the main draw of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Indonesia Open.

The Chinese player was one of the highest-ranked players to enter the competition, part of the BWF Superseries, at the qualification stage and never looked in danger of being a high-profile casualty on the opening day as he raced to a 21-14, 21-19 success.

Huang will be joined in the first round of the competition at the Istora Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta by Frenchman Brice Leverdez, who beat Alistair Casey of Scotland 21-4, 21-15.

Derek Wong gave Singapore some success to cheer as he overcame Estonian player 21-19, 21-17, while Malaysian Goh Soon Huat booked his place in the main draw with a convincing 21-14, 21-6 win against Muhammad Bayu Pangisthu of Indonesia.

In the women’s qualification, a host of Indonesian players ensured their participation at the event on home soil went beyond the first stage.

Hera Desi proved too strong for compatriot Vioni Florencya with a 21-18, 21-14 win, before Febby Anguini knocked out Priskila Siahaya, also of Indonesia, 21-16, 21-15.

Aprillia Yuswandari emerged victorious from her all-Indonesian affair with Intan Jayanti, progressing thanks to a 21-16, 21-15 triumph.

Elsewhere, Sawan Serasinghe and Setyana Mapasa of Australia came through their mixed doubles qualification match against Danish duo Anders Rasmussen and Maiken Fruergaard in one of the fiercest battles on the first day.

The Australian pair held their nerve to see out a 21-17, 12-21, 21-19 success in a match that lasted 48 minutes.

“I was here for the World Championships,” Serasinghe said.

“But this is amazing, one of a kind.

“Even though it’s qualifying, first day, everyone’s turned up - you don’t get this anywhere else.”

The women’s main draw begins tomorrow, with some of the world’s top players all due to be in action.

Indonesia’s Desi has the tough task of facing top seed Carolina Marin of Spain, while third seed Li Xuerui of China takes on Ruselli Hartawan.

The men’s first round then gets underway on Wednesday (June 1).
