Olympic lightweight champion Katie Taylor’s pursuit of a record sixth successive global crown came to an end here today at the Women’s World Boxing Championships as the Irishwoman suffered a shock split decision defeat at the hands of France’s Estelle Mossely.

A hotly-contested final round proved to be decisive with Mossely finishing strongly to nick the decision at the death and inflict a first World Championship defeat on Taylor since 2005, when she lost her quarter-final against North Korea’s Kang Kum-Hui.

Mossely now faces a showdown tomorrow with Russia’s reigning light welterweight world champion Anastasiia Beliakova, who rarely looked troubled on her way to a unanimous points win against Finland’s Mira Potkonen.

"I’m in the final but I don’t want to stop there," said the Frenchwoman after securing a first World Championship final appearance

"Right now I’m focusing on that final but all the stars are aligned for me to perform well."

In the first bout of the evening session, an impressive start from Britain’s Olympic champion Nicola Adams saw her hold off a spirited comeback from home favourite Zhaina Shekerbekova and ensure her place in the flyweight final.

Standing between Adams and a maiden world title is Thailand’s Peamwilai Laopeam after her narrow win over France’s Sarah Ourahmoune.

Italy's Alessia Mesiano then booked her place in the featherweight final with a unanimous victory against Bulgarian Denitsa Eliseeva, a first-time World Championship medallist with bronze.

Mesiano will next meet India’s Sonia Lather after she saw off the challenge of Kazakhstan’s Aizhan Khojabekova.

Awaiting her in the final is The Netherlands’ Nouchka Fontijn, who came through a stiff test against Britain’s Savannah Marshall.

The heavyweights closed out the semi-finals with American Shadasia Green reaching her first World Championship gold medal match thanks to a powerful display against Turkey’s Sennur Demir.

Home favourite Lazzat Kungeibayeva recovered from a slow start against China’s Shijin Wang to claim a memorable win and join Green in the final.

Earlier in the afternoon session, China’s Yuyan Wang secured her place in the light flyweight final after an entertaining encounter with the US's Marlen Esparza.

Esparza, the reigning world flyweight champion, come out fighting in the third round, but Wang’s well-timed attacks were ultimately the difference.

Wang will compete in the final against Kazakhstan’s defending champion Nazym Kyzaibay, a unanimous points winner against North Korea’s Yong Gum U.

Bulgarian bantamweight Stoyka Petrova beat the US’s Christina Cruz to power her way into a final showdown against Kazakhstan’s Dina Zholaman, who recovered from a slow start to defeat China’s Piaopiao Liu.

Having become only the second Irishwoman ever to earn a World Championship medal, light welterweight Kellie Harrington showed she has the potential to go all the way with a masterful display against Canada’s Sara Kali.

The 26-year-old must now overcome China’s Wenlu Yang, who looked equally comfortable in the second semi-final against Australia’s Skye Nicolson.

"This is a dream come true, I can’t believe it but I’m thrilled to be in the final," said Harrington, who is competing in her first Women’s World Boxing Championships.

"I have to focus on the final now, the gold medal is there and I am close to getting it.

"One fight to go, and that is where my focus is."

Chinese welterweight Hong Gu edged a close contest against Finland’s Elina Gustafsson to set up a final with home favourite Valentina Khalzova, a 3-0 victor at the expense of resilient German Nadine Apetz.

The first light heavyweight semi-final saw defending champion Xiaoli Yang of China narrowly outdo America’s Franchon Crews.

Joining her in the final is Australia’s Kaye Scott, who beat Turkey’s Elif Guneri on a split decision to leave her opponent distraught.
