France's Elodie Clouvel led women's individual qualification at the World Modern Pentathlon Championships in Moscow today.

Clouvel placed 16th in the opening fencing event before a series of consistent performances in the swimming, riding and run-shoot sections.

The 27-year-old, who won a mixed relay gold at Kaoshiung in 2011, ended on 1,058 points.

Germany's Lena Schöneborn, who has already claimed the mixed relay title this week in Moscow, finished narrowly behind in second place after also finishing on the same points total.

Russia's Gulnaz Gubaydullina qualified in third place with 1,057.

Natsumi Tomonago of Japan, Alice Sotero of Italy and Donna Vakalis of Canada occupied the next three places at the Olympic Stadium in the Russian capital.

It comes after German and South Korean golds in the women's and male team relays.

Men's individual qualification is set to begin tomorrow.
