Hungarian star Danuta Kozák won a battle between two Olympic champions to beat Lisa Carrington and claim a superb K1 500 metres victory on the second finals day at the Canoe Sprint World Cup in Duisburg.

The 29-year-old, an 11-time world champion who claimed K1 and K4 500m gold at London 2012, started steadily before stamping her authority on a top-quality field in the middle stages.

She finished ahead of New Zealand's 200m winner and Olympic champion Carrington.

Inna Osipenko-Rodomska of Azerbaijan took bronze to follow her 200m silver.

It marked a superb return to form for the Hungarian winner, who "only" claimed gold in the K2 event at last year's World Championships, laying down an ominous marker ahead of Rio 2016.

Italy's Manfredi Rizza took the K1 200m title for a maiden World Cup triumph.

France’s Maxime Beaumont took silver and Britain’s Liam Heath the bronze.
