Chaffey overcame a time penalty on his way to claiming victory in 58min 57sec, comfortably finishing ahead of Brazil’s Fernando Aranha - the runner-up in 1:05:10.

Great Britain’s Mark Conway came third in 1:06:19, 28 seconds clear of Japan’s Jumpei Kimura who narrowly missed out on a podium place to the disappointment of the home crowd.

"I am not sure what happened out there but I came in on the bike and I was told I had a penalty to serve," said Chaffey. 

"It couldn’t have been drafting because there was no one in front of me.

"I don’t know yet what it was for but I served that on the run.

"It doesn’t matter, I got the win."

Among the other headline makers was 2015 world champion Stefan Daniel of Canada, who won the men’s PT4 with a time of 58:56.

Mexico’s José Abraham Estrada Sierra had to settle for second spot in 1:00:16, while Russia’s Alexander Yalchik rounded out the podium in 1:00:33.

There was also success for Australia’s Kate Doughty as she continued her preparations for the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games with a convincing triumph in the women’s PT4.

Doughty posted a time of 1:09:53, which was nearly six minutes faster than closest challenger Ruth-ann Reeves of the United States.

Reeves registered 1:15:31 for silver, while Russia’s Anna Bychkova took bronze in 1:17:08.
