Rio 2016’s boxing and sitting volleyball venue Riocentro Pavilion 6 has been officially unveiled today, with Organising Committee President Carlos Nuzman describing the arena as “extraordinary”.

The facility is located in the Barra Da Tijuca region of the city and will have a capacity of 9,000 during the Games.

It will play host to Olympic boxing, with competition scheduled to run from August 6 right through to the day of the Closing Ceremony on August 21.

Pavilion 6, part of the Riocentro exhibition and convention centre, will then be switched to a Paralympic venue, where it will stage sitting volleyball from September 8 to 17.

The facility was constructed by GL Events, who also helped to build Pavilions 2, 3 and 4 at the Riocentro complex.

Athletes will be greeted by a 15-metre high roof that is supported by external columns, which means there are no restricted views for spectators, according to organisers.

It also has a floor space of around 7,500 square metres.

Rio mayor Eduardo Paes, who handed the keys to Nuzman to mark the official unveiling of the facility, believes it “represented a legacy of the Games for the city” while insisting no public money was used in its construction.

Following the completion of this year’s Olympics and Paralympics, the venue will be transformed into an amphitheater suitable for hosting sporting events.

It is also hoped the arena will attract high-level conferences and conventions, as well as other cultural activities.

While 9,000 people will be able to enter the venue during Games time, the capacity has been set at 5,500 once the event draws to a close, although GL Events Brazil president Arthur Repsold has suggested that could be extended to 10,000.

Rio 2016 held a boxing test event in December, which was staged over at the Riocentro Pavilion 4.
