Ukraine’s Illya Kvasha claimed the sixth LEN European Aquatics Championships men’s one metre springboard title of his career after producing a dominant performance here today.

The 28-year-old, who was named European Swimming Federation (LEN) Diver of the Year in 2010, was looking to win the title for the first time since 2013.

Impressive first and second round dives saw Kvasha lead the standings, while his team-mate Oleg Kolodiy followed in second place.

Kvasha, the 2015 World Championship silver medallist, delivered his best dive of the competition in the fourth round, with the score of 79.50 moving him into an even more commanding position.

He eventually finished the six-dive competition on a total score of 439.70, with Italy’s Giovanni Tocci finishing on 414.30 to win silver.

The Italian’s success was in part due to a superb final dive which was rewarded with a score of 83.70, the highest of the competition.

Constantin Blaha held off the challenge of Kolodiy to claim the bronze on 402.55, with the result seeing him become the first Austrian man to win a European diving medal since Niki Stajković in 1987.

Defending champion Mattieu Rosset of France finished a disappointing fifth, scoring 390.15.

Germany were able to celebrate success in the women’s 10m synchronised platform event, after Maria Kurjo and My Phan benefited from poor final dives from their rivals.

With the pair having finished the five-dive event with a score of 279.75, they then watched as Ukraine’s Ganna Krasnoshlyk and Vlada Tatsenko faltered to end on 278.01.

Britain’s Lois Toulson and Tonia Couch had been leading the competition ahead of the final round, but a low scoring dive saw them drop to fifth place on 267.72.

It confirmed Germany and Ukraine as the gold and silver medallists, while Hungary’s Gyongyver Villo Kormos and Zsofia Reisinger took bronze on 274.74.

Triple Olympic gold medallist and reigning world champion Natalia Ishchenko unsurprisingly emerged as the victor in the synchronised swimming free solo event.

The Russian’s routine received a score of 96.4000 from the judges, which saw her ease to the 10th European title of her career.

“We didn’t change anything in the solo routine from Kazan as in the Olympic year we have to focus on the events in the Games programme,” said Ishchenko.

“But I think this time it was even a bit better.”

Ukraine’s Anna Voloshyna claimed the silver medal with a score of 93.4000, having previously won bronze at the 2014 European Championships in Berlin.

The podium was completed by Italy’s Linda Cettuti, who was awarded 89.4333.
